Natural Gas Vehicles (May 3, 2005)

The city of  Toronto's incentives to upgrade taxi fleets with ultra-low emission cars took a step forward this week when Co-op Cabs placed an order for 40 natural gas, Crown Victoria taxis at an estimated cost of  $1.563-million.

"We made a business decision to upgrade our fleet and the city's incentives to use natural gas were key to our purchasing low emission cars", said Peter Zahakos, Operations Manager for Co-op Cabs. "The environment wins, owners and drivers win - and Toronto citizens win...".

Dedicated OEM natural gas vehicles are known to be the cleanest vehicles in the world powered by internal  combustion engines. The dedicated NGV Ford Crown Victoria was the first passenger car in the world to be certified as an ultra-low emission vehicle (ULEV) by the California Air Resources Board...these vehicles produce almost 25% less carbon dioxide (CO2) than the equivalent gasoline vehicle. Also, because there is no sulphur in natural gas, NGV's emit very little particulate matter and acid aerosols.

Enbridge is pioneering new conversion methods which will allow the use of dual fuel natural gas vehicles to be used as taxicabs.
