Happy Cyclist (May 18, 2005)

Last Friday i was riding my bike eastbound along King St. W. I stopped at the light at Niagara.A Co-op cab pulled up next to me. The driver leaned over and said: "I'm going to pull over and pick up that guy on the other corner". I'm sorry that I didn't catch the cab number because I really wanted to commend that driver for that simple courtesy. It's a jungle out there for cyclists anyway (as each season's death toll makes clear) and, quite frankly, cab drivers, who often feel that being behind the wheel all day makes them invincible and infallible, are often the worst hazard for bikes.Knowing that there are drivers out there who are aware of cyclists and how each of us depend on that strip of road closest to the curb makes a big difference. If there's a way you can encourage all your drivers to follow this man's excellent example, we'd go a long way to creating a safer, more civil streetscape in Toronto.

Thank you again to that unknown driver.
