On March 17, 2014, Ontario’s Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Glen Murray tabled a new piece of Legislation called, [‘Keeping Ontario’s Road’s Safe’.

If passed, this will bring about big changes to the province’s Highway Traffic Act and includes increases to the fine amount for drivers who open their door into the path of a cyclist.

Fines would range from $300 to $1,000, up from a range of $60 to $500, and raise the demerit points from two to three.

Taxi riders can often forget to look out the window to the road behind them before exiting onto the street when they are beside a sidewalk. The safety of the curb leads many to believe that there is no danger of being hit.

It is important for the safety of all our customers and those who are in their vicinity to please take a moment when exiting the cab to ensure there is no oncoming bicycle traffic.

While fines and demerit points can be an effective deterrent, the safety and well-being of all road users should always be top of mind.
